On God's Side: What Religion Forgets and Politics Hasn't Learned About Serving the Common Good
Wednesday, May 8 • 7:00 p.m., Sanctuary
(doors open at 6:30 p.m.)
Christian activist and writer Jim Wallis draws on inspiration from Abraham Lincoln to reflect on the common good outside of political labels. Instead of money, power, and prestige, people of faith should be concerned about the biblical “least of these". Wallis understands compassion as the doorway to justice for everyone around the world. His sources of inspiration range from The Chronicles of Narnia to the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan.
Jim Wallis is president and CEO of Sojourners where he is editor-in-chief of Sojourners magazine. His columns appear in major newspapers, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and The Boston Globe . He frequently appears on radio and television, as a commentator on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News — on shows such as Meet the Press, Hardball, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The O’Reilly Factor, and on National Public Radio.

Finding Moosewood, Finding God: What Happened When a TV Newsman Abandoned his Career for Life on an Island
Thursday, May 16 • 7:00 p.m., Sanctuary
For twenty-five years, millions of Americans watched Jack Perkins on NBC News as a correspondent, commentator, and anchorman. People were familiar with his face, his bearing, and his rich, reassuring bass. Yet at the age of fifty-two and at the height of his career, Jack Perkins disappeared from the public eye and moved with his wife, Mary Jo, to a bare-necessities cabin on an uninhabited island off the coast of Maine. This isolated home they came to call Moosewood was the setting for Jack and Mary Jo's spiritual awakening. In the busy years of Jack's career in Los Angeles he hadn't felt the need for God. In their new, quiet, and difficult life, though, he began to rethink everything he thought he knew. For thirteen years they endured (and learned to enjoy) snowbound winters, shuttling supplies from the mainland, testing themselves and their marriage, and discovering the rewards of a close-to-nature life, acknowledging that the hand guiding their blessed new lives was the hand of a gracious God who knew them long before they acknowledged him.
In Finding Moosewood, Finding God, Jack Perkins shares anecdotes from his successful career in journalism that began in Ohio with his coverage of the Sam Sheppard murder trial. He gives us insights into his encounters with a wide range of newsmakers and celebrities, from actor James Cagney to a young Stephen King. Yet in the midst of his career, Perkins experienced pangs of something deeper stirring within, something that would eventually lead him to build his Maine hermitage and begin his search for God.
Jack Perkins is the father of WCC member Eric Perkins, who, along with his wife Shelley, and their three children, is an active part of this faith community.
