My name is Alex Pemberton, and I’m a junior at Wayzata High School. I started this morning waking up at 5 am to be at the airport by 7 am to meet up with the other participants traveling to Mexico. We split into travel groups to go through security and met at our gate to leave for San Diego. When we landed, a bunch of us gathered around the outside of the airport to attempt a game of Uno, which didn’t last long. We all got to meet people that we’ve either just met, or have only seen around school or church. Crossing the border felt a lot smoother than what I’ve come to believe from Hollywood, and like that we were in Mexico.
Once we got to our campsite, we go settled in and hung out until dinner. Dinner was absolutely incredible and I would’ve gone up for thirds if they hadn’t brought out nachos at the end. We played a quick game and then went to Primetime which always has a special place in my heart, especially with the camp songs. JR gave us a wonderful talk about Building Foundation ending it with a question, “Why are you here?”. It’s a question I don’t think I can truly answer until we are on are way back home. For me today has had a lot of first for me: first time (and hopefully last) getting lost in the airport, first time in California, and first time in Mexico. With so many first already, and its only day one of five so far I can’t wait to see what the rest of the week holds.
