Rummage Volunteers

The Rummage Sale wouldn’t be possible without all of our valued volunteers.  Every summer over 600+ people of all ages and backgrounds come to volunteer their time during the “Rummage Season.”  You do not need to be a member of WCC; all are welcome to participate in a common mission, enjoying the social intergenerational benefits of community while sharing your time and talents.

The Rummage Sale Ministries is approved for all types of community service hours.

What if I can not help with sorting?  Are there other opportunities?
Volunteer opportunities exist all year for both individuals and organizations, times are flexible, and include “off” hour and one-time events. Many opportunities take three hours or less, such as set up of departments and organizing supplies, helping with scheduled furniture pick-ups, or helping with our Food and Fellowship group.

The clean-up and final storage of all support materials, signs, equipment, supplies, etc. lasts long into the fall. AND…there are opportunities to serve on The Rummage Sale Ministries Committee. There is a place for you!

Volunteer for Just The Sale Week
This week is full of activity! Many, many more volunteers are needed for the entire week of The Sale. Both lightweight sitting and heavy lifting jobs. A few jobs include: posting signs, raising tents on Sunday prior to The Sale, moving merchandise to tents, pricing, and on Sale Days, bagging and serving as a cashier.

Food and Fellowship Team
Help coordinate preparation, serving and clean-up of coffee breaks, pizza dinners, Wrap Up dinner celebration or volunteer sale day in Dick’s Grill (outdoor tent) or with other food events. Most food is provided prepared.

Clean Up After The Sale
On Friday, August 2:  all “leftovers” are boxed or bagged and made ready for pick up by outside social service agencies. All support materials, tables, racks, bins, hangers, etc., must be stored, and all broken or unusable items thrown away. Free child care available.

On Saturday, August 3: the pace is a little slower. Carpet cleaners arrive, and signs and supplies gathered, and any remaining equipment moved to storage areas. No supervised Childcare or Kids Korps.

 

CHILDREN AND YOUTH RUMMAGE PROGRAMS
The Rummage Sale is an invaluable way to connect the intergenerational members of our community – it keeps the more mature young and helps the young be more mature! The Rummage Sale offers great program opportunities for children and youth of all ages. Registration is required.

The Rummage Sale Children & Youth Programs offer a safe and caring place to play and learn with other children while offering parents and guardians the opportunity to volunteer and help with The Rummage Sale Ministry. The RSCC Program operates from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. There is no fee for The Rummage Sale Ministries Childcare Program. The only requirement is that parents or caregivers MUST be involved in a Rummage Sale Ministry activity at the same time.

All children ages 14 and under MUST be registered in either Childcare or Kids’ Korps. Daily sign-in and sign-out is required for all children & youth programs. Home base for Kids Korps sign-in/out is in the West  Entry. Childcare sign-in/out will be in the crib room. All minor age volunteers must have a signed emergency medical release on file. So many of our volunteers come with friends or grandparents that a signed emergency medical release form is required.

Childcare (Birth to age 5)
The Rummage Sale Childcare is located in the Crib Room.  Please bring a snack for your child. We serve snacks at 10:00 a.m. Note that we are PEANUT FREE. Please do not send any snacks that contain peanuts. Please provide a bottle or Sippy cup for younger children.  Bring a diaper bag with your children’s necessities (diapers, wipes, extra clothing, pacifier, etc.) and label ALL of your children’s possessions.

Kids Korps (Age 5 to age 14)
The Kids’ Korps Program is for children who are ready to “pitch in” and help. You know your own child best. By age 5, most children are capable of taking on a Rummage related “job.” It is a wonderful opportunity for all our volunteers, children included, to share together in a common ministry of service and fellowship.  No child is allowed to roam the building unsupervised

For children 11 and under youth leadership and supervision is provided during age-appropriate tasks and activities related to sorting and other preparations for The Rummage Sale.

A great opportunity for older kids (ages 11-14) to “work” rummage activities more independently under the direct supervision of The Program Leader, The Sale Director or Department Chair. They are given more significant volunteer jobs and responsibilities.

Older Youth (Age 14 and up)
Youth and teens are valued members of The Rummage Sale Ministries Team. You don’t need to be a member of WCC to participate in this important ministry. Bring your friends and volunteer today!

All volunteer opportunities associated with The Rummage Sale are open to youth and teens.
All Rummage-related activities can be done in a group.
All Rummage Sale volunteer activities can be individually tailored. Helping in the sorting and everyday organizing over the summer is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.
Summer employment opportunity!  Workers are needed to help supervise and care for our young volunteers. Download an application here. 

Independent, off-hours opportunities are available for those unable to volunteer during sorting hours through the summer or who have allergies that prohibit participating in the sorting areas.

Sale Week Children & Youth Programs, Sunday – Friday
Childcare and Kids Korps are offered to all volunteers at all activities during the busy Sale Week activities. Children 5 and under will be in Childcare. Kids Korps will be engaged in activities supporting their volunteer role with The Rummage Sale. All programs are staffed during all RS activities mornings, afternoons and evenings. Sale Day programs begin 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.
